IRATTIMADHURAM (Licorice Root)
As the name suggests, Iratti Madhuram or licorice roots have a bitter-sweet taste. It has high nutritional value and contains a compound called glycyrrhizin, which is believed to be sweeter than sugar and has anti-inflammatory properties. They are added to soft drinks for a sweeter flavour. Licorice (LCR), which was traditionally used as a natural sweetener and food flavouring element, is now often used in processed chewing gums, candies, and drinks, as well as prescribed medications. Also known as mulethi, yastimadhu, or sweetwood, it is an effective and potent medicinal herb in Ayurveda.
