Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre is a species of tree in the pea family, Fabaceae, native in tropical and temperate Asia including parts of Indian subcontinent, China, Japan, Malayasia, Australia and Pacific island. It is often known by the synonym Pongamia pinnata as it was moved to the genus Millettia only recently. Common names include Indian beech, Pongam oiltree, karanj (Hindi), honge/karajata(Kanada), pungai (Tamil), k?nuga (Telgu), karach (Bengali), naktam?la (Sanskrit), Magul karanda (Sinhala), Sukh Chain (Urdu)
A thick brownish oil can be extracted from the large seeds, and is used industrially and in medicine, notably for the treatment of rheumatis
